The Balancing Act of Compassion
"So that is the way I feel: that I can only try to approach this notion of being compassionate, of understanding that there is a connectivity, that there is a unity in this world; that I want to try and serve that unity, and that I can try and do that by understanding, I hope, trying to understand something of the pain of others; but understanding that there are limits, that people have to bear responsibility for some of the problems that come upon them; and that I have to understand that there are limits to my energy,to the giving I can give. I have to reevaluate them, try and separate out the material things and my emotions that may be enslaving me, so that I can see the world clearly." -Jackie Tabick, The Balancing Acts of Compassion
This connects to the story because Corrie was always compassionate through the hard times that she went through. She understood that she might not come out alive in the end, but she looked up to something positive to get her through the negativity of the camp. Corrie looked up to God the whole time. She had hope and faith that everything would be okay. There was enough bad at the camp that she didn't want to think of more bad things, because in the end that will only make everything worse. Corrie would tell herself that God was by her side through it all, and that she was thankful because she was still breathing at the end of the day. She just accepted the bad, and tried to move on in a positive manner. I think that if she wouldn't have thought this way, she would've been in a worse position that she was already at.
